The dynasty’s genealogy is preserved particularly well in the copper-plate inscriptions of its rulers.

Bhaskaravarman succeeded his elder brother Supratisthitavarman. His accession took place at a time when Kamarupa faced political challenges from neighbouring powers, particularly from the western regions of Bengal.

Rather than remaining confined to the Brahmaputra Valley, Bhaskaravarman pursued an active foreign and military policy. His reign eventually transformed Kamarupa into one of the significant political powers of early medieval eastern India.

The Government of Assam’s historical account identifies the 7th century, particularly the reign of Kumar Bhaskaravarman, as a crucial period from which the historical reconstruction of Kamarupa becomes considerably clearer.

Bhaskaravarman and the Varman Dynasty

The Varman dynasty occupies a foundational position in the history of ancient Assam. According to inscriptions, its genealogy begins with Pushyavarman and continues through a succession of rulers to Bhaskaravarman.

The Dubi copper plates, for example, preserve a long genealogy of the Varman rulers extending from Pushyavarman to Bhaskaravarman. The National Mission on Monuments and Antiquities describes the Dubi plates as an important epigraphic record associated with Bhaskaravarman and the Varman dynasty.

The Varman inscriptions also connected the dynasty with the legendary lineage of Naraka and Bhagadatta. Such genealogical traditions were important instruments of political legitimacy, linking the ruling house of Kamarupa with prestigious figures of ancient Indian tradition.

Alliance Between Bhaskaravarman and Harshavardhana

One of the most important achievements of Bhaskaravarman was his diplomatic alliance with Harshavardhana, the powerful ruler of Kannauj.

During the early 7th century, Shashanka of Gauda emerged as a major power in Bengal. Both Harsha and Bhaskaravarman had strategic reasons to oppose the expansion of Gauda.

Bhaskaravarman therefore sent his ambassador Hamsavega to establish diplomatic relations with Harsha. The alliance subsequently became one of the most notable political partnerships of 7th-century India.

Bhaskaravarman in the Harshacharita

The alliance is described by Bana Bhatta in his Sanskrit work Harshacharita, the biography of Harshavardhana.

Bana presents the relationship between the two rulers through comparisons with celebrated partnerships from Indian epic and religious traditions. Modern scholarship also notes that Bhaskaravarman’s genealogy was presented by his emissary Hamsavega during negotiations with Harsha. (Heidelberg University HASP)

The alliance is significant because it demonstrates that Kamarupa was not an isolated frontier kingdom. It actively participated in the interstate politics of northern and eastern India.

Military and Territorial Importance

Bhaskaravarman strengthened Kamarupa’s position along its western frontier. His political relationship with Harsha helped Kamarupa counter the influence of Gauda.

The Nidhanpur copper-plate inscription is particularly significant in this context. The grant was issued from Bhaskaravarman’s victory camp at Karnasuvarna, the capital of Gauda, and records the renewal of an earlier land grant. This provides important evidence for understanding the political reach of Kamarupa during his reign.

The exact extent of Bhaskaravarman’s territorial control remains a subject of historical interpretation, but his reign clearly demonstrates the considerable political influence Kamarupa exercised in eastern India.

Xuanzang’s Visit to Kamarupa

Another major source for the history of Kumar Bhaskaravarman is the account of Xuanzang, the Chinese Buddhist monk and traveller who visited Kamarupa around 643 CE.

Xuanzang’s account provides valuable information about the king, his court, the people, geography, religion and economic conditions of Kamarupa.

According to Xuanzang, Kumar Bhaskaravarman was a Brahmana by caste and used the title Kumara. He described the king as being fond of learning and noted that learned people from distant regions were attracted to his kingdom.

Interestingly, Xuanzang also records that Bhaskaravarman was not a Buddhist, but that he respected learned Buddhist monks. The king had reportedly invited Xuanzang to visit Kamarupa after hearing about his journey and scholarship.

This provides evidence of the intellectual and diplomatic openness of Bhaskaravarman’s court.

Pragjyotishpura and Kamarupa Under Bhaskaravarman

Pragjyotishpura, generally identified with the ancient capital region of Kamarupa, was an important political centre.

Xuanzang’s account gives valuable information about the geographical and economic character of the kingdom. He described the land as low and moist, with regular agricultural production. He also mentioned the abundance of coconut and jackfruit.

The region’s fertile river valleys provided favourable conditions for agriculture, while the Brahmaputra and its tributaries facilitated communication and movement.

Bhaskaravarman and Chinese Diplomacy

Bhaskaravarman’s diplomatic connections extended beyond the Indian subcontinent.

His period coincided with contacts between India and the Tang dynasty of China. The Chinese envoy Wang Xuance is associated with diplomatic exchanges involving Bhaskaravarman and Harsha.

These contacts demonstrate that Kamarupa participated in wider diplomatic networks connecting eastern India with the larger Asian world.

Thus, Bhaskaravarman’s reign can be studied not merely as a chapter in Assam’s regional history but as part of the broader history of early medieval India’s international relations.

Nalanda and Bhaskaravarman

Kumar Bhaskaravarman also had connections with Nalanda, one of the most important centres of learning in ancient India.

A royal seal associated with Bhaskaravarman was discovered at Nalanda. Such archaeological evidence complements the literary accounts of his intellectual and diplomatic connections with North India.

His association with learned circles and his reception of Xuanzang reinforce the image of a ruler whose court valued scholarship.

Dubi Copper Plate of Bhaskaravarman

The Dubi copper-plate inscription is one of the most important sources for the study of the Varman dynasty.

The plates were discovered near Dubi in Assam and are associated with Bhaskaravarman. The inscription provides genealogical information about the Varman rulers and records the reissue of an earlier land grant.

The National Mission on Monuments and Antiquities notes that the surviving Dubi plates contain a genealogy extending from Pushyavarman to Kumar Bhaskaravarman.

For students preparing for APSC and UPSC, the Dubi inscription is particularly important because it helps establish the political history of early Kamarupa.

Nidhanpur Copper Plate Inscription

The Nidhanpur copper plate is another crucial source for the history of Bhaskaravarman.

Discovered at Nidhanpur in present-day Sylhet region, the inscription records the renewal of a land grant to Brahmanas. It contains information about the administrative organisation and land-grant practices of Kamarupa.

The National Mission on Monuments and Antiquities records that the grant involved a substantial number of Brahmanas and refers to the administrative unit Chandrapuri Vishaya.

The inscription is especially valuable because it provides evidence about:

Land grants

Brahmana settlements

Administrative divisions

Revenue-free land

Agrarian expansion

Royal authority

Varman genealogy

Consequently, the Nidhanpur Copper Plate is a key source for understanding the administrative and socio-economic history of ancient Assam.

Society Under Bhaskaravarman

The society of Kamarupa during Kumar Bhaskaravarman’s period was culturally diverse.

Brahmanical traditions had gained considerable influence, particularly among the ruling and educated classes. Brahmanas received land grants from rulers and played an important role in the spread of Sanskrit learning and religious practices.

At the same time, Kamarupa was home to numerous indigenous communities. The social structure therefore represented an interaction between Brahmanical institutions and local traditions.

The evidence from inscriptions suggests that land grants were an important mechanism through which agricultural settlements and Brahmanical institutions expanded.

Economic Life During Bhaskaravarman’s Reign

Agriculture formed the foundation of the economy of Kamarupa.

The fertile plains associated with the Brahmaputra and its tributaries supported rice cultivation and other crops.
