Exam Note: GSDP of Assam for 2024-25 is projected at Rs.6,43,089 crore (Budget Estimate). The GSDP grew at a CAGR of 12.51% between FY16 and FY26. Per capita income grew 10.3% in 2024-25. National average per capita income is Rs.2,00,162.

In 1950-51, Assam’s per capita income was 4% above the national average. Due to geopolitical disruptions and structural constraints, it declined significantly. By 1998-99, per capita income had dropped 41% below the national average.

Sectoral Composition of the Economy of Assam

Assam’s economy is divided into three major sectors. As of 2023-24, the breakdown of GSDP is:

SectorGSDP Share (2023-24)Key Sub-sectors
Services SectorPrimary (Agriculture)Secondary (Industry)
Services Sector46%Trade, Hotels, Transport, Public Admin
Primary (Agriculture)35%Crops, Livestock, Fisheries, Forests

Key Fact: Assam’s agricultural share in GSDP (35%) is nearly double the national average (~19%). The services sector leads at 46%, driven by trade, hotels, transport, and public administration.

Agriculture

Agriculture is the backbone of Assam’s economy, engaging the majority of the rural population. The state’s fertile Brahmaputra valley and Barak valley support a wide variety of crops.

Major Crops

  • Rice (Paddy) — Staple crop. Assam’s yield was 1,531 kg/ha against India’s national average of 1,927 kg/ha — indicating scope for improvement (a common exam theme).
  • Jute — Assam is a major producer; important for export.
  • Sugarcane, Mustard, Pulses — Key Rabi and Kharif crops.
  • Fruits & Vegetables — Lakhimpur banana, Kamrup betel nut, Nowgong pineapple.
  • Sericulture — Assam produces all four types of silk: Muga (unique to Assam), Eri, Pat, and Tassar. Muga silk has a GI tag.

Fisheries

Assam has 1.5 million hectares of inland water bodies with 165 varieties of fish. Despite this, fishing remains largely traditional. The state is not yet self-sufficient in fish production.

Livestock

The livestock sector contributed Rs.11,222 crore to GSDP at current prices in 2022-23, recording a growth of 16.18% — making it one of the fastest-growing sub-sectors within agriculture.

Forest Resources of the economy of Assam

Assam’s recorded forest area is 26,836 sq. km, representing 34.21% of the state’s total geographical area. Forests contribute to timber, bamboo, medicinal plants, and ecotourism.

Exam Alert: Per capita food grain production in Assam has declined over the past five decades. Farm mechanisation (distribution of tractors, power tillers, threshers) is a key government initiative under Budget 2024-25.

Tea Industry

Assam’s tea industry is globally iconic and critically important for state revenue and employment.
